The end of freaky-blinky
I took the trek to the Apple Store last night with my flaking power supply for my PB and my freaky-blinky iPod shuffle.
For the AppleCare’d power supply the Genius Bar spent 45 minutes testing it, blaming the powerbook and then looking for a replacement part (which they had to order and I have to go pick up).
For the 14-month old (i.e. out of warranty) shuffle all they did was listen to me, plug it into their machine to make sure I wasn’t lying, looked at a tech support page and then gave me a new one. Problem solved, and clearly it’s not unique. I used to have sentimental attachment to objects but as the “replace it, it’s a consumer device” culture continues I’m starting to get over it. Bye Bye old shuffle, hello new shuffle.
And it was sad to see that my $149 shuffle has a replacement cost of $89. That’s depreciation, even though the price changes were to make space for the $149 1Gb Nano.
