Aaah, the subtleties of the primary process. The Democratic party have a 40% backup option – in-situ “super delegates” who get to vote for who they want. This means that popular party vote only contributes for 60% of the presidential candidate (and that’s after the whole confusion with delegates).
Why?
One was not to get (ideologically) extreme candidates; the other was to avoid the Jimmy Carter phenomenon

Crikey! Could they make this ANY more confusing? And I actually am interested in deciphering the process. But sorry, this wikipedia entry only served to confuse me more. What’s so bad about a straight popular vote, eh?
