Different view of the world
I love the irony when the U.S. Presidential Election is held on November the 4th (“the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November”) as it was this year.
And I’m tickled pink when it’s held on November 5th!
This is because, for the UK and those of the old Empire, November 5th is Guy Fawkes Night when we light big bonfires and burn effigies of a conspirator to kill the king in 1605 (read wikipedia for more). It was compulsory to celebrate this for 250 years (“It is primarily marked in the United Kingdom where it was compulsory, by Royal Decree, to celebrate the deliverance of the King until 1859”) – imagine, celebrating by edict.
Anyways, culture was different in those days, and I’m somewhat surprised this event survives political correctness in this day and age but you have to like (well I do) a country that celebrates a failed attempt at an explosion by building fires. Mmmm.
