Yesterday Lucy and I went to Ballard Market to pick up a few groceries. Lucy knows that the espresso stand there has toys, so while we were checking out, she started to wander over that way. She looked back at me and said simply, “Toys?” “Sure, go on. I’ll be right there.” I followed and figured I might as well have a latte.
Shortly thereafter, an older man came in and ordered a coffee. While he waited for the barista to make it, he sat down beside me and started to unwrap a bite-sized piece of chocolate. Lucy watched him intently. He noticed her watching and said, “Oh hey, I have an extra. Do you want a piece of chocolate?” I thanked him kindly but said “no thank you, she doesn’t even know what chocolate is.” He apologized. “Oh sorry, I wasn’t even thinking”. No big deal.
Less than 30 seconds pass. Lucy is still watching closely. He pulls a bottle of wine out of his grocery bags and studies the label. Lucy gasps loudly, points, and shouts, “WINE”. He looks at me skeptically. “Hmmm….she doesn’ t know what chocolate is, but she knows wine?” How could I respond? I’m glad she didn’t start in on her rendition of “Goldfinger”!
